Opera is finally jumping into the AI race by adding ChatGPT to its browser. The first feature to be tested is a new “Shorten” feature that will use the AI chatbot to summarize web pages and articles. The company plans on adding more features to make the browsing experience better.
Microsoft has already started integrating ChatGPT into the Bing search engine and Edge browser. On the other hand, Google has started developing its own AI chatbot, Bard. Opera is integrating ChatGPT into its sidebar.
“Users of the Web are constantly flooded with content in amounts that are impossible for us to process. With generative AI helping us create written materials faster, there will only be more and more content. Beyond giving its users access to AI services such as ChatGPT, Opera also decided to look at this opportunity from another angle and to develop an AI-solution that filters through all the content and summarizes it for users in a relevant way.”

Using ChatGPT on Opera Browser
The company shared a demo of the new ChatGPT feature in a blog post. Opera users can enable the new ChatGPT feature by clicking the “shorten” button to the right of the address bar. After that, a sidebar will appear on the left, summarizing the article or webpage you’re viewing using ChatGPT. Users will also be able to access ChatGPT directly from the sidebar.
Unfortunately, the “shorten” feature isn’t available to everyone just yet. However, ChatGPT will “launch in browsers very soon,” according to Jan Standel, VP of marketing and communications at Opera. The company is also working on AI-powered features to augment the browsing experience.
Opera also plans to add “popular AI-generated content services to the sidebar” alongside the ChatGPT “Shorten” feature. Users can download the Opera Browser Beta or developer build to access these AI ChatGPT features earlier than everyone else.

At the time of writing, the current developer build doesn’t have the ChatGPT feature yet. However, Beta and developer-built users will be the first to get the feature before anyone else.
