Twitter Allows Cannabis Ad In Legal States

By becoming the first of its kind, the microblogging giant Twitter on Wednesday updated its ad policy and allowed the advertising of Cannabis in the U.S. states where it is legal. 

This comes as the result of an update by Google on its policies, wherein it allows ads for FDA-approved pharmaceuticals containing CBD and topical and hemp-derived CBD products with a THC content of 0.3%.

What is the new policy on Twitter Cannabis Ads?

The places now known are California, Colorado, and Puerto Rico. Before this, Reddit was the only platform that allowed ads for tropical and non-ingestible hemp-derived CBD products in the U.S., whereas Meta allowed ads for some hemp products.


As per Twitter’s blog post, “The cannabis space on Twitter is fun and engaging with users Tweeting about their experiences using Cannabis – whether medicinally, for wellness, or recreation – as well as recommending brands, products, and retail locations. The conversation also reflects where the cannabis industry is currently heading: legislative/policy reform, business development, and community impact. Through this, Twitter aims at ethical and responsible marketing of Cannabis.”

What are the criteria for promoting Cannabis Ads?

As per Twitter, legal states like the U.S. and Canada would be prime beneficiaries. Advertisers must be pre-authorized and licensed by the responsible authorities. This also includes other filters like the age criteria not exceeding 21 and the correct geographical jurisdiction where a particular license to sell and promote is issued.

The advertiser should also ensure that there are no claims of health benefits as it might be misleading and can be interpreted incorrectly. Other prominent restrictions include the advertisement using other means like any character, a celebrity, or a popular figure, as it might lead to different problems and have an adverse effect on society.

Well, this is nothing new, as the CEO himself has admitted to smoking weed. This might also be taken as a refurbishment of the entire Twitter and its image in the global world. Changes in the company have not been new to our readers since the inception of Musk monitoring the company.
